Attic Insulation - How Much Is Enough?
Proper insulation is one of the best ways to maximize comfort
and minimize energy bills.
The U.S. Department of Energy and Austin Energy recommend that homes in Central Texas have “R-38” insulation levels in the attic.
The Department of Energy estimates that a properly insulated attic can shave 10 to 50 percent off your heating bill. And it works the opposite way for warm climates; in summer, it helps stabilize your house's indoor temps to keep cooling needs in check.
Insulation is like a blanket that keeps heat outside in the summer and inside in the winter. All insulation works the same way: by trapping tiny air pockets that slow the movement of heat out of a house in winter and into a house in summer. Its effectiveness at resisting this movement is called its R-value; the higher the value, the lower your energy bills. But to achieve its rated R-value, insulation must be installed correctly. In fact, a bad job can actually make matters worse.
