Earlier in 2020, we held a giveaway for a free HVAC system! The Austin homeowner with the oldest HVAC unit would receive a brand new Carrier AC system. In April, we called Mr. Jerry Rabun and informed him he was the winner! Jerry’s air conditioning unit was a whopping 52 years old!
Jerry told us he wasn’t surprised that his air conditioner was the oldest in Austin, Texas. “I probably didn’t sound that excited [when Al called], and I apologize for that,” he said. “I felt that it was impossible for any human to keep a system running for that long.” You’re right, Jerry! None of us could believe that an air conditioner was still running after 52 years, but we verified it ourselves. And, yep! That old unit had been running for over half a century!
Then in May, our installation technicians visited Mr. Rabun’s home and installed his brand spankin’ new air conditioner.
Now, with summer behind us, we wanted to check in with Jerry and get his take on the installation and performance of the new system.
New AC Installation Was Smooth Sailing
The McCullough Heating & Air team installed the high efficiency Carrier air conditioner in May 2020. Although we were in the middle of a global pandemic, our team safely installed the unit by following our COVID-19 precautions.
The installation took several hours over the course of one day. Jerry said that the service he received was top notch. “They were very professional dealing with an overly helpful neighbor,” Jerry said, referring to himself. “I was really impressed by the whole team.”
This job was a unique experience for our McCullough team. Replacing an air conditioner of that age comes with unique challenges, but it’s not a problem for the experienced installation technicians at McCullough. Our installers kept things “neat and tidy” according to Jerry – it’s the same care and attention to detail we take with every single project.
More Comfort, Less Money
Life is a little different for Jerry since the installation of a top-of-the-line Carrier unit.
“The system works great. It’s very quiet. We don’t even know it’s running!”
Jerry noted that his home feels better balanced since the startup of the new air conditioner. With his old unit, there were big temperature differences depending on where you were in the home. The new system fixed the uneven temperatures and keeps the entire house within 1-2 degrees of the setpoint.
Another big change: significantly lower electricity bills. On August 31st, Gerald posted on our Facebook page, “Just received my 2nd full month utility bill since the install of my new Carrier high efficiency unit. My August electric bill is $123 less than last year with my 1980 era “high efficiency” unit. Thanks guys for a great system.”
Why We Gave Away a Free AC: The R22 Phaseout
We held the free AC giveaway to raise awareness about the R22 phaseout. The chemical refrigerant used in older air conditioners R22 (sometimes called Freon®) is being phased out of use. The U.S. EPA has restricted the import and production of the refrigerant as of January 1, 2020. That means the refrigerant will be harder to find, driving up the price of repairs of older units.
If your air conditioner runs on R22, it’s time to think about replacing it. If you act now, you can take advantage of special offers and 0% financing with approved credit.
