When you spend the money to install and maintain an HVAC system, you would expect equal heating and cooling throughout the house. Cold spots and uneven heat in your home is not a lot of fun. Unfortunately, hot and cold spots are quite common. Check out a few of these tips that we recommend to our customers who are experiencing hot and cold spot.
- Check your vents – Blocked vents and registers can be a significant cause of hot and cold spots. In addition, if the events or registers are dirty they may not function properly. Make sure none of your vents are blocked, and then consider vacuuming them with a special attachment to remove dust. In addition, if there are areas of your home you do not use on a regular basis, partially closing some vents might help with temperature control in the other areas of the house.
- Try running the fan – You probably have the fan on your thermostat set to auto. This means that it will only run when the house is actively heating or cooling. However if you leave it on the ON position, the fan will stay on and circulate air even when the system is off. This may help even out temperatures throughout the home. Just keep in mind, that depending on what type of blower you have, running the fan continuously will add a bit your electricity usage each month.
- Check ducts for leaks – If there is a leak within your duct system, the air meant to go to a specific part of your home will partially leak out before it arrives. This definitely makes the air conditioner or heater work harder than necessary to compensate for the missing air, leading to hot and cold spots.
- Insulation – Adding some insulation to the attic of your home is a relatively simple solution to dealing with hot and cold spots. The extra insulation will help the temperature remain consistent throughout the home all year round.
- Consider a zoning temperature control system – Installing a zoning system is a major investment. However, it can be one of the most efficient ways to deal with a home that Heats and cools unevenly. This thermostat allows you to control the temperature of different areas or floors. A professional HVAC contractor should be able to recommend a system that will work well with your home.
